Unicode is the single, universal system that lets computers store and display text from every writing system on earth, including Urdu. Before it existed, each language and program often used its own incompatible code, so text created in one place turned to nonsense somewhere else. Unicode fixed that by giving every character, from the Latin A to the Urdu ب, one agreed number that works the same everywhere.
Why Unicode was a turning point for Urdu
For years, Urdu on computers was fragile. Fonts carried their own private layouts, and moving text between programs broke it constantly. Unicode changed the game by standardising Urdu letters, joining forms and diacritics. Today, when you type Urdu in WhatsApp, Word, a browser or a phone, you are almost always typing Unicode, and it looks correct on the other person's device too.
How Unicode handles Urdu
Urdu is cursive, so each letter changes shape depending on its position in a word. Unicode stores the underlying letter, and the font plus the text engine work out the correct connected form. This separation of character from shape is why the same Unicode text can render in many different Nastaleeq or Naskh fonts.
Where Unicode does not reach: InPage
There is one big exception in the Urdu world. Classic InPage, the dominant desktop publishing program for Urdu print, predates widespread Unicode adoption and uses its own glyph based encoding.
